Meta releases an open-source AI model trained specifically for medical research, enabling researchers worldwide to analyze clinical data.

Meta has released an open-source AI model specifically trained for medical research, enabling researchers worldwide to analyze clinical data, medical images, and scientific literature. The model is available free for academic and research use.

The model, called Med-Llama, was trained on 2 million medical images, 500,000 clinical notes, and 10 million scientific papers. It can assist in diagnosing conditions from X-rays and MRIs, extracting insights from electronic health records, and identifying patterns in medical literature.

"We're making advanced AI tools accessible to researchers who otherwise couldn't afford them," said Meta's AI Research lead. "Medical AI shouldn't be limited to well-funded institutions."

The release includes model weights, training code, and documentation. Meta has also provided APIs for integrating the model into existing research workflows. The company worked with medical institutions to ensure appropriate use cases and limitations are clearly communicated.

Early users report promising results, with Med-Llama matching or exceeding proprietary models on several medical imaging tasks. The open-source release is expected to accelerate medical AI research globally.
