Toyota announces strategic partnership with Waymo to develop autonomous vehicles, combining Toyota's manufacturing with Waymo's self-driving technology.
Toyota has announced a strategic partnership with Waymo to develop autonomous vehicles, combining Toyota's manufacturing expertise with Waymo's self-driving technology. The partnership represents Waymo's first major collaboration with a traditional automaker.
Under the agreement, Toyota will build purpose-built vehicles designed specifically for autonomous driving, integrating Waymo's sixth-generation autonomous driving system. The vehicles will be used for Waymo's ride-hailing service and potentially sold to other autonomous fleet operators.
"Toyota's commitment to safety and manufacturing excellence aligns perfectly with Waymo's technology leadership," said Waymo's CEO. "Together, we can accelerate the path to autonomous vehicles at scale."
The partnership addresses Waymo's need for manufacturing scale while giving Toyota access to proven autonomous technology. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal is valued potentially in the billions over its multi-year scope.
Toyota has committed $2 billion to autonomous vehicle development over five years, with the Waymo partnership representing a significant portion of that investment. Commercial deployment is targeted for 2028.
