Bipartisan legislation proposes $50 billion in federal funding over five years to accelerate US AI research and maintain competitive advantage.

US Congressional leaders have introduced bipartisan legislation proposing $50 billion in federal funding over five years to accelerate domestic AI research and ensure American competitiveness in the global AI race.

The American AI Initiative Act would establish new national AI research laboratories, fund university AI programs, and create public-private partnerships with tech companies. Supporters say the investment is critical to maintain US leadership against accelerating competition from China.

"Every dollar we invest in AI research is a dollar invested in American prosperity and security," said the bill's sponsor. "We cannot afford to fall behind in this transformative technology."

The funding would be distributed across several priorities: $15 billion for basic AI research, $12 billion for AI safety and alignment, $10 billion for healthcare AI applications, $8 billion for defense AI, and $5 billion for workforce development.

The legislation also includes provisions for ethical AI development, requiring funded research to address bias, transparency, and accountability in AI systems. An advisory board including representatives from industry, academia, and civil society would oversee implementation.

Similar initiatives have passed in the UK ($1.3 billion), EU (€20 billion), and China (¥15 billion), creating pressure for comparable US investment.
