Australian government enacts comprehensive AI safety legislation with mandatory reporting requirements.

Australia has passed comprehensive AI safety legislation requiring companies developing advanced AI systems to report safety incidents and implement risk management frameworks.

The legislation, which passed with bipartisan support, establishes Australia's approach to AI governance and positions the country as a leader in responsible AI development in the Asia-Pacific region.

"This legislation balances innovation with protection of Australian citizens," said the Minister for Industry and Science. "We want Australia to be a destination for responsible AI development."

Key provisions include mandatory reporting of AI safety incidents, requirements for transparency in high-risk AI applications, and establishment of an AI Safety Advisory Board. Penalties for non-compliance can reach up to $50 million.

The legislation aligns Australia with similar moves in the EU and UK, potentially facilitating cross-border AI governance cooperation.
