Apple and Broadcom Show Why RF Chips Still Matter

Apple's expanded agreement with Broadcom is also a semiconductor story. The announcement highlights custom silicon components and wireless connectivity technologies, including radio-frequency components made in the United States.

RF chips sit in a difficult part of the device stack. They must handle signal quality, power efficiency, antenna constraints, regional bands, and tight board space. A small improvement can affect battery life and reliability across hundreds of millions of devices.

The deal also shows how supply-chain strategy is spreading beyond leading-edge processors. Advanced logic receives most of the attention, but smartphones and wearables depend on many specialized components. If one category is constrained, the whole product can be delayed.

For the chip industry, the message is that strategic silicon is broader than CPUs and GPUs. Connectivity, power management, sensors, packaging, and RF parts all matter when hardware companies try to control performance and reduce supply risk.
