Remote Assistance Is the Quiet Test for Robotaxi Scaling

Robotaxi companies talk about autonomy, but scaling also depends on what happens when the vehicle encounters an edge case. NHTSA's 2026 AV Safety Forum agenda treated remote assistance as a key topic, which is exactly where the operational challenge sits.

Remote assistance can mean different things. It may involve confirming a planned maneuver, advising a vehicle that is stuck, approving a deviation, or in some designs taking more direct control. Those differences matter for safety, latency, staffing, cybersecurity, and public trust.

The public usually sees the empty driver's seat. Operators see a fleet system that needs depots, cleaning, charging, incident response, mapping updates, customer support, and remote operations. A robotaxi service is not just a car. It is transportation infrastructure.

The companies that scale responsibly will be clear about what remote support can and cannot do. They will also need to show regulators and riders that unusual situations are handled by a tested process, not improvisation.
