The U.S. public charging network is no longer judged only by how many ports exist. Reliability, payment flow, location quality, and real-time data now matter just as much as the headline count.
The Department of Energy's national EV charging material points to the role of standards, reliability, APIs, and data collection in building an interoperable network. That is the right emphasis. A charger that appears on a map but fails at the plug creates more damage to driver trust than an unavailable station that is clearly marked offline.
Operators need to publish useful operational data: connector status, completed-session rates, repair times, pricing, and payment options. Public agencies funding infrastructure should demand the same. Counting installed hardware is easier, but it does not tell drivers whether a trip is dependable.
The next competitive advantage for charging networks may be boring execution: clear signage, working card readers, responsive maintenance, and accurate app data. For EV adoption, those basics matter more than another press release about total ports.
