Connector standardization is important, but it is not the whole charging problem. As more vehicles and networks move toward common connector support, the user experience will still depend on station uptime, pricing clarity, route planning, and support when a session fails.
The Department of Energy's charging-network resources emphasize interoperability, APIs, reliability, and public charging data. That focus is practical. A connector that fits the car is only useful if the station is available, the account or card works, and the driver can leave with enough range.
Automakers also have a role. The in-car route planner needs accurate charging data and realistic arrival estimates. Charging networks need to expose station status honestly. Site hosts need maintenance contracts that treat broken chargers as urgent, not decorative infrastructure.
The NACS transition may reduce one source of friction, but it raises expectations. Once drivers assume the plug will fit, every remaining failure feels less acceptable.
